This was the bullet that started it all. Produced by pressure-forming pure copper tubing around a pure lead core, this highly reliable bullet was the first custom bullet available to American handloaders. Introduced in 1939, it was long the favorite of professional hunters who demanded performance they could depend on, each and every time. On impact, Barnes's Original bullets typically expand to more than 200 percent of their original diameter and retain 70 to 90 percent of their original weight.

The Barnes Original is a true hunting bullet generations of sportsmen have relied on.

  • Pure copper tubing jacket
  • Pure lead core
  • Controlled expansion
  • Deep penetration
  • Proven performance

BARNES 45-70 (.458) 400gr BULLET "ORIGINAL" works in .458 SOCOM

By Gerald G. on Jul 22, 2020
These BARNES 45-70 (.458) 400gr BULLET "ORIGINAL" Soft Spire Point flatbase bullets are high quality. The box's bullet weights, per bullet, are nominal are the 400gr area and rarely strays from that.
When loaded into the .458 SOCOM, these Barnes 400gr pointed soft lead tipped, thick copper pipe-like jacketed rifle bullets are consistent in their performance in feeding thru the aluminum US G.I. service M16 rifle magazine: after the mag is slightly modded / notched at front near rifle's feed ramp for the massive .458 SOCOM.
Very good quality and nice to have that when you stake your life on these bullets, especially when in Alaska.
